Multi-talented UK artist Samm Henshaw - that’s Iniabasi Samuel Henshaw in full – possesses a voice you won’t forget. In fact, it’s the first thing any listener will notice about Henshaw, full of emotion that ripples far beyond his years. Henshaw honed his vocal talents in the church, and last year caught the attention of a wider audience with a show-stopping slot at Boxpark’s Acoustic Afternoon.
Alongside the gospel greats Helen Baylor, Fred Hammond and Alvin Slaughter, he spent his childhood devouring mainstream pop music, from Stevie Wonder and Michael Jackson to Usher and N*Sync. These days, he pinpoints his biggest vocal inspirations as D’Angelo, Paolo Nutini and Lauryn Hill - influences that come through in his raspy falsetto - and writes lyrics that resonate with the poetry of Frank Ocean.
Displaying the depths of his musical abilities, Henshaw’s forthcoming EP The Sound Experiment sees him turn his hand to both singing and rapping while also playing guitar, keys, drums and a smattering of bass.
Without even releasing the full EP, Henshaw has piqued the curiosity of industry tastemakers with just one original track being self-released via Soundcloud, titled ‘Only Wanna Be With You.’ Following a show-stopping performance at Hoxton Bar & Kitchen that captivated all onlookers in the room, he has been selected for BBC Radio 1Xtra’s Record of the Week.
Henshaw’s profile is rapidly growing, and shows no signs of slowing down any time soon. In brief, this is undoubtedly a year to keep both eyes and ears peeled for Samm Henshaw.
